[glow=white,2,300]Do you usually just bite people's heads off or do you contemplate gnawing them off slowly before you type?
LotR and PotC are historical movies. Lord of the RIngs is very much a historical movie. The Rohirrim are Anglo-Saxon in style, though more Norse in behavior. The Gondorians are Medieval. The Hobbits are roughly colonial time, 1774 ish. PotO is what would be most likely considered a "period piece". PotC, however, is somewhere in the late 1600's to early 1700's. A historical movie doesn't have to be totally informational. Anything that shows a culture, or clothing, etc, from the past is historical.
Historical Fiction A historical novel or movie is a novel in which the story is set among historical events, or more generally, in which the time of the action predates the lifetime of the author. As such, the historcial novel is distinguished from the alternate-history genre. Historical fiction may center on historical or on fictional characters, but usually represents an honest attempt based on considerable research (or at least serious reading) to tell a story set in the historical past as understood by the author's contemporaries. Those historical settings may not stand up to the enhanced knowledge of later historians.
Period piece In the performing arts, a period piece is a work set in a particular era. This informal term covers all countries, all periods and all genres. It may be as long and general as the medieval era or as limited as one decade, the Roaring Twenties, for example.
So says the Wiki.
Other movies: Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, El Cid, The Princess Bride, Robin Hood, THe Court Jester, Brigadoon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson, Knight's Tale, A Christmas Carol (Muppet or non-muppet), The Robe, Most Wishbone stories (he goes back in time with literature.), Sherlock Holms, Gladiator, Master and Commander, Troy, The Mists of Avalon, Ivanhoe, Hidalgo, THe Prince of Egypt, and Indiana Jones, to name a few.
Oh, and anyone who has posted over 1000 posts can IM me about what they would like their new title to be. [/glow]
